About James Lull
James Lull is Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at San Jose State University, California, specializing in media studies, cultural studies, and evolutionary communication. Dr. Lull has also taught in the United States at the University of California-Santa Barbara, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Semester at Sea Program. He received a Doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters degree with Honors at the University of Oregon. James also holds honorary doctorates and professorships at several universities in Europe and Latin America..
Professor Lull has been granted Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards (Brazil and Mexico) and a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship (England). He has taught courses at universities in the People’s Republic of China, Brazil, Venezuela, Finland, Denmark, England, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Sweden. Dr. Lull is author or editor of more than a dozen books in English. His books have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish, Romanian, and Ukrainian. Fluent in Spanish, James has published many articles in that language, and regularly teaches and conducts research in Mexico, South America, and Spain.
James Lull is active in the popular media too. He worked for years as a professional journalist, media programmer, and radio announcer. James was a military journalist and broadcaster in Vietnam. He has been program director of KSJO-FM San Jose and KTYD-FM Santa Barbara, California. He appears as host of a DVD feature in the re-release of the Academy Award-winning film, Platoon: 20th Anniversary Edition. He has appeared as a cultural commentator for Cable News Network (CNN), CNN Headline News, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), YLE Finnish National Television Corporation, National Public Radio, KGO-TV and KGO-AM San Francisco, KABC-FM Los Angeles, WCCO-AM Minneapolis, WYUR-AM Detroit, and many other radio and television stations in the United States and abroad. His written essays have been published in the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, Minneapolis Star, Honolulu Advertiser, San Francisco Chronicle, International Herald Tribune, and San Jose Mercury News, among many other publications.
